산(山)은 땅이 솟구쳐 오른 큰 힘이자 많은 생명들이 살아 숨 쉬는 터전이다. 또한 고요하고 거대한 명상의 공간이다. 작가는 산(山)의 정적이면서도 역동적이고, 강하면서도 부드러운 산의 심상을 주제로, 스테인리스 스틸을 주제와 맞닿은 재료로서 지속적으로 탐구하여 도시와 자연, 강함과 부드러움, 힘과 고요함이 서로 어우러지는 모습을 다양하게 표현해 왔다.

인공적이고 차가운 물성을 가진 스테인리스로 자연을 표현한 것은 도시에 살아가면서도 늘 자연을 그리워하는 작가의 마음에서 비롯되었다. 작가는 산과 바다에서 얻은 휴식과 위안, 그 생명력에서 느끼는 경외심을 반짝거릴 때까지 스테인리스를 다듬고 연마하는 끈질긴 노동으로 전달한다. 정렬된 사각형 파이프 표면이 만드는 산세 위에 주변 환경이 비쳐, 도시와 자연이 작품 안에서 겹쳐진다. 유연하고 부드러운 흐름이 딱딱하고 각진 기둥과 어우러진 형태와 거울처럼 빛나는 표면에 비치는 주변의 모습 속에서 서로 다른 두 세계가 만날 때 일어나는 다양한 힘들에 대해 이야기 할 수 있기를 바란다.

A mountain is a great force of the risen land and the base for numerous living creatures.

It is also a quiet and huge space for meditation. With the theme of the mountain’s static yet dynamic, strong yet gentle character, Paik Jinhyeon has continuously studied stainless steel as the material suitable for the theme, and expressed various aspects of city and nature, strength and gentleness, force and silence coming together. 

Paik’s longing for nature while living in the city is expressed through such cold and artificial material. The artist conveys the rest, comfort, and awe of its vitality gained from the mountains and the sea through the persistent labor of refining and polishing the stainless steel until it shines. The surrounding environment is reflected on the mountains created by the aligned rectangular pipe surfaces, and the city and nature overlap in the work. Paik hopes to talk about the various forces that occur when two different worlds meet in the form of flexible and soft flow against hard and sharp-edged pillars and from the reflections of their surroundings.
