<Tiger of the Flowing River> revives the tiger, a traditional Korean symbol, within the modern urban landscape. In the art of the Joseon Dynasty, the tiger served both as a guardian warding off evil spirits and bringing good fortune, and as a symbol of justice and order. Based on this symbolism, the artist reinterprets the “tiger” as a friendly companion that citizens may encounter while walking along the Danghyeon Stream. The sculpture, made of metal and light, reexpresses the humor and protective symbolism of the tiger found in traditional folk paintings through a contemporary sensibility that offers comfort and joy to citizens weary from their daily lives. The artwork functions as a bridge between past and present, myth and reality, creating moments where an ancient symbol communicates anew with the community in a modern public space.
