사람의 눈에 보이지 않는 것을 관찰할 수 있는 여러 가지 도구가 있는데 미세하고 작은 세계를 관찰할 수 있는 ‘현미경’, 저 멀리 있는 세계를 관찰할 수 있는 “망원경”이 있다.
그 망원경으로 우리가 볼 수 없었던 하늘 너머 우주의 별들을 관찰할 수 있게 되었고, 더 머나먼 우주를 관찰하기 위해 허블 망원경을 만들었고, 최근 제임스 웹이라는 천체 망원경으로 머나먼 우주를 더 자세히 구경할 수 있게 되었다.
하지만 현재 우리가 접할 수 있는 우주의 모습이란 것은 NASA와 뉴스를 통해접할 수 있던 것뿐이었다. 과연 이게 전부일까? ‘상상한 것만 관측’되는 우주 망원경인 코스모스 코프를 통해 간접적으로 경험할 수 있는 [우리들이 상상하고 있는 우주]를 VR180으로 표현하였다. 작가의 관심 주제 중 하나인 우주 행성 개척 중 하나인 테라포밍과 지구를 떠날 때 가져가고 싶은 것을 우주 영상에 담았으며 코스모스의 두 가지 의미인 (꽃 이름과 우주) + 망원경의 합성인 코스모스 + 스코프로 이름 지었는데 10월 한 달 코스모스가 피고 질 때만 볼 수 있는 망원경이기도 하다. 노원 불암 초등학교 어린이들이 그려준 아이디어 중 이번 주제에 가장 부합되는 몇몇 작품을 적용하여 제작한 [코스모스코프 VR]을 통해 우주에 대한 고정관념에서 벗어나 보길 바란다.
There are various tools that can observe what is invisible to the human eye, such as a “microscope” which can observe the miniscule world, and a “telescope” that can observe the world far away. Telescope enabled us to see the stars in the outer space that are invisible to the naked eye, and Hubble telescope was created to observe even farther space. Recently, the space telescope named James Webb was invented to allow us to get a closer look at the distant space. However, at the current state, what we can know of the space is only through NASA and the news on TV.
But, could that be all there is? Through COSMO[S]COPE, a space telescope that “only shows what you imagine,” [the space of our imagination] that can be indirectly experienced is displayed in VR180. One theme of the artist’s interests, terraforming – a pioneer of the space planets – and what they want to take when and if leaving the Earth are contained in a videoclip of the space. The name “COSMO[S]COPE” is a combination of “cosmos”, which has the dual meaning of a flower and space, and “scope” from “telescope.” This is also a telescope that only operates in the month of October – the month that the flower cosmos are in bloom. Created with some ideas from the students of Nowon Bulam Elementary School, may COSMO[S]COPE VR help you break away from your previous thoughts of space.
