이 작품은 공허한 상태의 쓸쓸한 심경을 묘사한 윤동주의 시 윤동주의 시 ‘흰 그림자’에서 영감을 받아 제작하였다. 그림자가 모든 사물을 무표정하게 동일한 색과 실루엣으로 채우는 것에 비하자면 작품의 ‘하얀 그림자’는 그 조차도 사치처럼 느끼게 한다.

작품에서 빛 덩어리는 사각에 갇혀 있으며 조명에 의해 그림자로 한번 복제된다. 사각의 틀은 금속 선으로 드로잉한 것처럼 중첩되어 배경과 레이어의 부조화가 일어난것 처럼 보이기도 한다. 작품은 외부의 조명을 통해 빛 덩어리의 그림자를 정확하게 그리운다. 하지만 그 ‘하얀 그림자’가 전달하고자 한 공허하고 부질없음을 흔들리는 그림자로 보여준다. 빛은 사물들의 형태와 그림자를 드러나게 만들지만 자신보다 강한 빛에 의해 그림자를 형성하기도 한다는 것을 은유적으로 표현하였다.

This artwork was inspired by Yun Dong-Ju’s poem, “White Shadow,” which portrays the lonely feeling of emptiness. The shadow fills everything with the same color and silhouette without expression, upon which the “white shadow” feels like an extravagance in itself.

In the work, a lump of light is trapped in a square and once reproduced as a shadow by the lighting. Metal lines overlap as if drawn to form the square’s frame, which also look as if there is an incongruity between the background and the layer. The work accurately depicts the shadow of the lump of light through external lightings, but the emptiness and futility that the “white shadow” intends to convey are shown in wobbly shadows. The work metaphorically expresses that light reveals the shape and shadow of things, but it also forms a shadow by the light stronger than itself.
