Park Guk-Jin <Synecology>

당현천 길가에 대조적이며 낯선 식물인 선인장이 서 있다. 억지스럽게 타종의 식물과 어울려 있는 모습은 불과 몇십 년, 아니 몇 년 전만 해도 상상할 수도 없던 낯선 풍경이다. 군집을 이루고 있는 선인장은 서부영화와 같은 매체에서 많이 볼 수 있는 대표적인 대형 선인장인 사와로(Saguaro) 선인장이다. 그는 대부분 사막과 같은 척박하고 건조 지대의 가혹한 환경에 살고 있다. 사와로 선인장은 척박한 환경에 적응하여 가시로 자신을 보호하는 원시적인 형태를 갖추는데, 주위 인간을 포함하여 동식물들에게 마실 것, 먹을 것, 그리고 안식처를 제공한다. 수명이 다해 쓰러지면서도 모든 것을 내어놓으며 그 지역의 생태계에 유익한 환경을 만들어 낸다. 세계적으로 신재생에너지와 같은 탄소중립 확산 등 환경에 관한 이슈가 심화되고 있는 만큼 언제까지 선인장과 같은 자연에만 의존할 수는 없는 상황이다. 거대담론이니만큼 향후 미래와 다음 세대에까지 영향을 주는 이유에서 한 번쯤 이러한 풍경을 마주하길 바란다.

The cactus in a cluster is called Saguaro cactus, which is often seen in Hollywood’s Western movies. They’re usually found in extreme conditions of barren lands in a dry climate. The Saguaro cactus provide water and food to humans and the living things around it while adapting to such environment by taking the primitive form of protecting itself with thorns, benefiting its habitation. With the environmental issues such as the carbon emission are intensifying, we cannot rely on the Saguaro cactus-like nature to save us forever. Artist Park Guk-Jin wishes the viewers to witness the landscape as what he had created once in a while, to be reminded of this matter that affects our future generation.
