우주에서 길을 잃은 여행자들이 하나, 둘 모인다. 꺼져가는 불을 쬐러 모인 여행자들은 말도 통하지 않고 어색하기만 하다. 자리가 가득 찼는데도 이들과 함께하려는 여행자가 다가오자 불이 활활 타오르며 모든 여행자들의 얼굴을 비춘다. 센서를 설치한 네 개의 의자가 하나의 불꽃을 둘러싸고 배치된다. 

하나의 의자에 사람이 앉으면 랜덤으로 다른 하나의 의자에 불이 들어오고, 두 번째 사람이 불이 들어온 의자에 앉으면 남은 둘 중 하나의 의자에 불이 들어오게 되어 사람들은 의자의 빛이 만드는 우연한 관계 속에 놓이게 된다. 네 개의 의자에 사람들이 모두 앉으면, 다섯 번째 사람이 다가오면 중앙의 모닥불이 얼굴을 확인할 수 있을 만큼 환하게 타오른다. 코로나 시기에 유행했던 ‘불멍’을 엔데믹 시대 버전으로 새롭게 해석한다. 혼자 불을 보며 휴식하는 ‘불멍’이 아닌, 둘러앉아 함께 노래하고 이야기꽃을 피우는 모닥불을 즐길 수 있도록 했다. 모닥불에 앉은 사람들은 우연한 계기로 만나 서로의 얼굴을 보고 이야기 나눌 수도 있고, 모닥불 빛을 바라보며 시선과 뜻을 한곳으로 모을 수 있다.

Travelers who are lost in space gather one by one. They are gathered to warm up by the dying fire, but cannot communicate and remain awkward. Although the seats are full, when another traveler approaches, the fire starts to burn brightly and shines on all their faces. Four chairs with sensors are arranged around one flame. 

When a person sits on one chair, a random another lights up, and when the second person sits on the lit chair, one of the remaining two lights up, putting the people in an accidental relationship created by the light of the chair. When all four people are seated, the fire in the center burns brightly enough for all their faces to be recognizable as the fifth person approaches. This work is a new endemic-era’s interpretation of “blank-staring the burning flame” that had been popular during the COVID-19 period. Instead of resting alone staring at a flame, a bonfire is presented for people to sit around together, sing, and chat the night away. Strangers gathered around the bonfire can look at each other’s face and strike up a conversation, or gaze together upon the light that burns endearingly.
