Chon Seung-Il <God of Sun and God of Moon>

우리는 해신, 달신과 남쪽과 북쪽을 가리키는 남두육성과 북두칠성, 그리고 북극 3성, 5행성, 28수 등이 기록된 고구려인들의 벽화 속에서 우주와 별자리에 대한 각별한 신앙을 확인할 수 있다. 

강서대묘 고분 벽화인 사신도의 청룡·주작·백호·현무 등도 각 방위 별자리 모양에서 비롯됐다. 특히 고구려인들은 ‘우주’를 지상적인 것과 천상적인 것의 이원론으로 분리시키거나 대립시키지 않았다. 

인간과 초인간(신)은 단절이나 폐쇄 혹은 대립과 갈등이 아닌 공존과 융화의 유기체적 관계로 인식했다. 즉, 고구려인들에게 ‘인간’은 죽음으로 종말하고 무화(無化)하는 생명체가 아니라, ‘우주(Cosmos)’의 운행에 평화롭게 적극 참여하며, 하늘과 땅 그리고 신들과 자연의 이웃으로 함께 불멸하는 존재였다. 고구려인들은 이를 ‘무덤 그림’으로 시각적으로 표현하여 ‘새로운 형이상학의 지평’을 펼쳐놓았다. 

본작품은 이러한 고대 고구려인들의 우주관에 기반한다. 우리의자랑스러운유네스코세계문화유산고구려고분벽화. 고구려인들의 세계상과 예술로지은웅비(雄飛) 하는아름다운우주공간, 고구려고분벽화는현재의우리와고대시대를이어주는소중한문화유산이자, 시공간을넘어서는문화적 · 정신적소통과대화의통로이다.

Sasindo – the ancient mural of Kangso Three Tombs – has ancient drawings of Blue Dragon, Red Phoenix, White Tiger, and Black Turtle Snake, which all derive from the shapes of constellations. 

The Goguryeo people had not separated or placed the ‘universe’ in dualism, and without disconnecting or destroying, they acknowledged the secular and heavenly things to be in a relationship of coexistence and harmony. In other words, for Goguryeo people, “humans” were not lives that shall be deceased one day, but continuing in immortality by peacefully joining the operation of “Cosmos” along with the sky, the land, and the gods. And, by visually expressing this concept in the tombs,” they opened up a new field of metaphysics. 

This artwork is based on such view of the universe from the ancient Goguryeo people. The Goguryeo tomb mural filled with such incredible worldview in beautiful artwork is Korea’s proud UNESCO World Heritage property, which connects our current time with ancient wisdom and creates a channel for cultural and spiritual communication transcending time and space.
