일제 강점기 시절인 1924년 윤극영 선생이 작사, 작곡한 동요 ‘반달’을 모티브로 한 작품이다. 고난의 시절에 민족적 염원과 가야 할 길을 노래로 승화하여 소원한 예술가와 군중들처럼, 현시대의 우리들도 선조들의 지혜를 본받아 팬데믹과 같은 힘겨운 시절을 문화와 예술을 통하여 극복하고 희망찬 미래를 향하여 앞으로 나아가자는 작가의 뜻이 담겨있다.
작품은 120여개의 작은 달들과 하나의 나무형상의 달로 이루어져 있다. 달은 스스로 빛을 내지 못하지만 작품 속의 달들은 스스로 빛을 내며 반짝인다. 지구의 달은 혼자이며 스스로 빛을 내지 못한다. 나무는 달과 계수나무가 합쳐진 형상으로 서 있고, 그 주위에 군집을 이루듯 작은 달들이 모여 장관을 이룬다. 작가는 홀로는 빛을 내지 못하는 평범한 사람들도 꿈을 갖고 행복할 때 빛나게 되고 그 꿈들이 여럿 모일 때 세상을 밝힐 수 있다는 메시지를 전한다.

This artwork is inspired by the children’s song “Half Moon,” written and composed by Yoon Geuk-young in 1924 during the Japanese colonial rule over Korea. Like the artists and the people who have sublimated their national aspirations into music in times of hardship, Artist Lee Gibeom expresses that we can overcome the pandemic through art and culture and move toward a hopeful future. 

The work consists of about 120 small moons and one that is tree-shaped. A moon cannot shine on its own, but the ones in the work shimmer and sparkle on their own. The tree is a combined form of the moon and a laurel tree, and the herd of small moons around it create a magnificent view. The artist’s message is that an ordinary person who feels as if unable to give off light on his or her own can come to shine when harboring a dream and brings happiness, and by the gathering of those dreams.
