2024 Moonlight Walk: Breath

Subject: Breath

The moon breathes too. It waxes and wanes, revealing and concealing itself, repeating its cycle. The cycles born from the moon's breath extend far beyond what meets the eye. They interlock with the movements of vast celestial bodies, connecting to the ebb and flow of tides and all manner of ecological cycles. This year's ‘Nowon Moonlight Walk’ begins by weaving together these grand cycles with the smaller cycles created by our own inhalations and exhalations.

Breathing harmonizes opposites. Exhaling expels something, yet it is always to inhale again. It is the act of drawing out what was within while simultaneously receiving what is outside. It reminds us that inhalation and exhalation, yin and yang, are ultimately one.
From the perspective born of breath, opposing concepts like inside and outside, part and whole, tradition and modernity, youth and age, fullness and emptiness, light and shadow are never divided into two sides. They exist only within a single, boundless cycle.
Through this breath, we can transcend the divide between humans and nature. Danghyeoncheon Stream, where diverse artworks are displayed, is an artificial waterway cultivated by humans for use as a park. Yet it is also home to countless plants and animals. We must remember that humans are merely one part of a vast cycle.
When everything feels blocked and you can't do anything, taking a breath finally creates a small opening. The moment we seek to create through art might actually be that kind of opening. This ‘Nowon Moonlight Walk’ explores the theme of breath from multiple angles, created together with diverse artists, the local community, residents, and the flora and fauna of Danghyeoncheon Stream. Synchronize your breath with the vibrant works born from the gathering of different beings. Each time your own breath mingles here, this place will breathe anew.
